 Nutritional supplements are used by athletes from professional, popular and competitive sports. In 2001 a study funded by the IOC and carried out by the doping laboratory Cologne, Germany, showed that about 15 % of the analyzed nutritional supplements obtained in 13 different countries contained anabolic substances (mainly prohormones of testosterone and nandrolone) which were not declared on the product label. These results created great uncertainty among athletes of different performance classes. The Cologne List allows manufacturers to avoid such uncertainties among athletes, trainers and specialists in sports medicine. The Cologne List offers the possibility of a voluntary self-disclosure optionally including a laboratory analysis of product batches. The Cologne List is a service offered by the Olympic Centre Rhineland. A fee of € 300,- p.a. plus the effective VAT (value added tax) is charged for publishing a product on the Cologne List.
